Wyoming Sports Betting Bonuses

Wyoming Sports Betting Law
Wyoming legalized sports betting by passing HB 133. After a narrow defeat the previous year, lawmakers approved legislation to authorize online and mobile sports betting. Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed the bill into law on April 5th, 2021.
State law authorized online sports betting in Wyoming only because the state lacks a commercial casino industry to support retail sportsbooks. However, tribal casinos may also opt to launch retail sportsbooks under existing Class III gaming compacts with the state.
The Wyoming Gaming Commission regulates sports betting, issues licenses to operators, and adopts additional regulations as needed. State law directs the Gaming Commission to issue no fewer than five online sports betting licenses to qualified applicants.
Per state law, operators “must establish their suitability for a permit by clear and convincing evidence.” Among other requirements, applicants must hold sports betting licenses in at least three other jurisdictions.

Past Efforts to Legalize Sports Betting in Wyoming
The Wyoming legislature showed little urgency to legalize sports betting until 2020, when Rep. Tom Walter introduced HB 225. The bill ultimately failed by a 32-27 vote in the House, but the movement put Wyoming in play.
HB 225 only sought to authorize mobile online sports betting in Wyoming as the state lacks a major land-based gambling industry aside from a smattering of smaller tribal casinos. The bill would have issued licenses to online sportsbook operators at the cost of $20,000, set the Wyoming sports betting tax rate at 16%, and established a minimum age of 18 to bet on sports in Wyoming.
As neighboring states: Colorado, Montana, and South Dakota legalized sports betting, Wyoming lawmakers quickly warmed to the idea of legalizing sports betting apps as gambling dollars left for greener pastures. After HB 225’s failure, pro-gaming legislators confirmed they would try again soon.

Wyoming gambling law could be construed as unfavorable to daily fantasy because WY Stat § 6-7-101 defines gambling as risking anything of value in whole or in part upon chance. WY Stat § 6-7-101 details the state’s definition of gambling, which could be interpreted to apply to online gambling in Wyoming:
(iii) “Gambling” means risking any property for gain contingent in whole or in part upon lot, chance, the operation of a gambling device or the happening or outcome of an event, including a sporting event, over which the person taking a risk has no control, but does not include any of the following:
The provision continues to outline exceptions to the definition related to charitable gaming, prizes paid out in bona fide contests of skill, the state lottery, and private games hosted among friends in which no one earns a profit other than their personal winnings.
WY Stat § 6-7-102 outlines the penalties for participating in gambling and being involved in the business of professional gambling (which the law defines as inducing others to gamble or earning a profit by running a game).
Participants in unlawful gambling games can be charged with a misdemeanor offense, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $750 fine. Anyone found engaging in professional gambling can be charged with a felony to receive up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000.
Wyoming does not have a history of prosecuting gamblers who participate in unauthorized forms of online wagering, but state law is clear on the matter of its legality. Currently, there are no legal means to play online casino games or online poker in Wyoming. All signs point to a long wait before the first licensed Wyoming online casinos launch.
Responsible Gambling in Wyoming
The Wyoming Gaming Commission and various state regulations aim to prevent problem gambling, educate the public of its dangers, provide resources for those who may need help dealing with a gambling problem, and operate a voluntary self-exclusion problem.
