It’s called the Fantasy Golf Millionaire, and it guarantees $3,000,000 in prizes, with a juicy one million dollar payout for the winner. Competition is stiff with room for nearly 150,000 entries, but the upside is that it costs just $25 to take a crack at the most lucrative daily fantasy golf competition online.

In addition to accepting direct buy-ins, DraftKings hosts inexpensive satellites. Win one of the many satellite contests to get a seat in the next Millionaire Maker at a fraction of the cost. You’re going to have to beat a lot of people to earn the top prize, but a relatively flat payout structure ensures that more than 20% of the field earn $25 or more for their efforts. What this means for you is that you need to outscore about 80% of the lineups to earn a positive return on your entry fee.

In addition, the top few places issue massive payouts. Here’s an example from a recent PGA Millionaire Maker:

  • 1st Place: $1,000,000 + entry to a future DraftKings Fantasy Golf Millionaire
  • 2nd Place: $100,000
  • 3rd Place: $50,000
  • 4th Place: $30,000
  • 5th Place: $20,000
  • 6th Place: $15,000
  • 7th Place: $15,000
  • 8th Place: $10,000
  • 9th Place: $10,000
  • 10th Place: $10,000

You can buy right in to the main event for a flat $25. You can set your lineup starting now and you’ll have until the tournament begins to edit your lineup as news comes out and golfers are added or dropped. If $25 is a little steep for the old bankroll, you can start winning your way in today via satellites for $0.25, $2 and $5.

Whether you buy in or win a seat, your next step will be to select a team of six golfers with a $50,000 salary cap. Golfer salaries competition align closely with the Vegas odds for each player. The generally accepted favorites such as Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson come with the highest prices. These are the players most likely to accumulate points through great golf and achieving a strong finish in the tournament.

Prices for players range from a high of $12,700 down to a low of $5,800. Given the budget considerations, it is impossible to just draft the best six golfers in the world and go for broke. You’ll need to balance affordability with the value provided by each golfer.

The hard part in all of this is drafting your team, deciding who to pick and trying to keep it all under $50,000. Once you finally set your lineup, the hard part is over. All you have to do after that is turn on the TV and watch the tournament. Your golfers will earn points based on the performance in the tournament.

Your team will accumulate points by accomplishing achievements such as eagles, birdies, pars, their finishing position in the tournament, and streaks such as 3 birdies in a row.

In short, better your golfers do, the more points they earn. If your team outscores every other team in the contest, you’ll take the top spot and win a million dollars. Congratulations; you’re a millionaire. If you’re not able to take the top spot but still manage to place in the top ~24,000, you’ll win a consolation prize ranging anywhere from $100,000 on down to $40.

DraftKings.com awards points to fantasy teams based on each player’s performance on individual holes, overall ranking at the end of the tournament and for accomplishing streaks or other feats.

The stroke total for each hole adds to or subtracts from each golfer’s point total. Your golfers earn 8 points for eagles, 3 points for birdies, half a point for pars and lose points for bogies/double bogies.

Golfers also earn points at the end of the tournament based on their ranking. The golfer who takes first place earns 30 points, while 2nd place gets 20 points, 3rd place gets 18 points and so on down.

Additionally, your fantasy golfers earn points for scoring 3 birdies in a row, golfing a bogey-free round, completing all 4 rounds under 70 strokes and achieving holes in one. See BettingUSA’s fantasy PGA page for a complete breakdown of golf scoring at DraftKings.

It’s rare for fans to find a competition where they have a legitimate shot at winning a million dollars through fantasy golf. In fact, it was absolutely unheard of in fantasy sports before the PGA Millionaire Maker debuted. DraftKings and FanDuel had been hosting million dollar contests for football for quite some time, but it was still surprising when DraftKings DFS announced the PGA Millionaire Maker.

For just $25, the Millionaire Maker is a great deal.
