Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is wreaking havoc on the gaming industry across the globe. In the US, its impact has been swift and pronounced.
For most of its life, the 1961 Wire Act was an uncontroversial piece of legislation. But in the age of online gambling, the Wire Act, and its applicability to online gambling, has become an enigmatic piece of legislation. So much so that it is winding through the courts as we speak.

Nevada’s revenue report had extra significance in January. For the first time, the Nevada Gaming Control Board provided a breakdown of land-based and online sports betting in the state. The result was about a 50-50 split between the two betting channels. That lines up with what analysts have heard through backchannel chatter for several years.
The legal US online gambling hierarchy is clear; casino and sports betting are the king and queen. But it wasn’t always this way. Online poker was supposed to be a big part of the equation.
It’s safe to say things are afoot in the world of Maryland gambling. The Terrapin State is already considering legalizing sports betting, as well as legislation that would eliminate the requirement for a statewide referendum to expand gaming. And now, legal online gambling might be entering the mix.
