What is a social casino and how do they work? Virtual currencies fuel casino-style play
Rather than real money, social casinos work on a system of digital-only virtual currencies that members use to play games. These virtual currencies are split into two forms - Gold Coins (GC) and Sweeps Coins (SC). These can be redeemed as real world prizes once certain conditions have been met:
- Use in gameplay: Before they can be redeemed, Sweeps Coins must be used in play for a set number of times.
- Minimum SC balance: To make a prize redemption request on eligible SC, you'll need to build a minimum SC balance. This could differ depending on the prize.
Social casino vs sweepstakes casino key facts
The terms social and sweepstakes casino are often used interchangeably but it's important to understand this distinction. Sweepstakes casinos are also often labeled as 'social' because they have a strong focus on community play but they must also offer the chance to redeem SC prizes. The most important facts are:
- All social casinos give players free virtual currency to play games.
- Gold Coins are only for entertainment and cannot be redeemed.
- Sweeps Coins can be redeemed once players have reached certain conditions.
- GC and SC can be collected through various promotions.
- Playing at social casinos is purely for entertainment.
- Players at sweepstakes casinos also have the option to redeem SC as tangible prizes.
Are social casinos legal?
Yes, the model used at social casinos means that no real money gaming takes place. Therefore, social and sweepstakes casinos are legal across the US, including in states where playing at real money casinos isn't possible.
However, you should note that social and sweepstakes casinos aren't available in all 50 states. Social casinos only offering fun play are widely available but sweepstakes casinos might encounter extra restrictions because of the option to redeem SC as cash prizes or gift cards.
Some states have issued a blanket ban on all sweepstakes casinos, including:
- California
- Connecticut
- Idaho
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Michigan
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Jersey
- New York
- Tennessee
- Washington
Restrictions around state availability can change, and may differ at certain brands. These will be set out in the terms and conditions so you can check before you sign up, especially at brand new social casinos in the USA.
Pros and cons of social casino sites

Not available everywhereWhat makes the best social casinos?
To determine the sites that can truly be labeled 'the best', a huge mix of social casinos are compared and assessed according to the following. These are all criteria which actively contribute to a positive player experience.
Focus on security
Before adding a brand to this page, it's necessary to make a thorough exploration of its safety credentials. Despite there being no real money used on the site, it's still important for social and sweepstakes casinos to operate according to set regulations.
No one under 18 can access a sweepstakes casino, but this age limit can increase to 19 or 21 at some sites or in certain states. To ensure that all customers meet this limit, and any state restrictions, social casinos impose a KYC verification requirement. This means all customers will be asked to upload copies of documents proving their identity and home address, such as a passport and utility bill.
Players must do this before they can redeem SC prizes but it's best to get it done as soon as you register.
A cosmopolitan game choice
For a site to be considered among the best social casinos, it has to have a game choice with something for every type of player:
Slots
Reel based games are the mainstay of lobbies at social and sweepstakes casinos. They generally form the largest proportion of titles and give players a choice between games with various play styles, such as megaways, jackpots and hold and win games.
At top social casinos, slots are available from an assortment of makers such as BGaming, BetSoft, Kalamba, Hacksaw and Evoplay. This helps to ensure players can access the freshest themes, crisp graphics and interesting features.
Instant win games
An increasingly popular category at sweepstakes casinos, instant win games have rounds that last a few seconds only. They also have a quick playing style and simple mechanics. For example, in Mines, players must select the safe grid squares without triggering an explosion that ends the game.
Table games
Table games provide an authentic casino experience and, like the other games at social and sweepstakes casinos, can be played for free. Although often not the largest category, the finest social casinos make sure to give players a broad sweep of options such as roulette, blackjack, and poker.
Live dealer games
Live dealer games connect players at sweepstakes casino sites with a real life dealer who plays out the game in real time via an HD live stream. Again, this isn't such a common option but an increasing number of brands are adding this category covering blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps and live versions of slots and game shows.
A clear SC redemption system
Playing at selected sweepstakes casinos gives players the option to redeem Sweeps Coins as real world prizes. At the top sites, information on this process, including SC redemption requirements and typical SC redemption times, are clearly set out. This gives players a head start when they're planning their SC redemptions and helps to avoid issues.
SC redemption times can vary depending on the prize selected. SC redeemed as gift cards may make use of third party sites such as PrizeOut to allow players to choose their reward. Your gift card is often then sent to you within a few hours. SC redeemed as cash prizes can be sent via bank transfer or an e-wallet like Skrill and this can take several days to arrive.
Assorted new player and ongoing bonuses
The highest rated social casinos provide members with lots of opportunities to collect free Gold and Sweeps Coins through ongoing bonuses. As part of the evaluation process to find the best social casinos, we consider the number and size of rewards as well as how easy they are to claim. Some of the most common promotions available are:
- Welcome bonus: Your first introduction to the site, a welcome bonus at a sweepstakes casino usually contains both Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins.
- Daily login bonus: A standard among the industry, a daily login bonus at a sweepstakes casino gives players a chance to collect free GC and SC when they log into their account.
- Referral bonuses: One of the most popular promotions, referral bonuses allow you to share a personal link with eligible friends and family.
- Offers on Gold Coin purchases: As mentioned above, it’s not necessary to buy Gold Coins to play at social casinos but the option is always available and part of the experience for many players. All of these offers shouldn’t be seen as free SC no deposit promotions as deposits aren’t possible at sweepstakes casinos.
There are often bonuses attached to GC purchases, such as a discount on the price.
Convenient customer support
Before a brand can be designated as a top social casino, it has to demonstrate high quality customer support. That includes several methods to get in touch with the support team as well as helpful, professional and prompt support. Options at top sites can include a live chat or messaging service and a dedicated support email service. These sites also have FAQ sections covering the basics of playing.
Easy payments
If you want to take advantage of Gold Coin purchases, the highest ranked brands give customers several payment options, from credit and debit card to e-wallets such as Apple Pay and Skrill.
An accessible site with strong mobile presence
In order to create this list, the mobile accessibility of each social and sweepstakes casino is thoroughly vetted. Some sites offer a dedicated app, but all of the top brands are developed with a mobile-first mindset that means they’re accessible from all devices.
What are the top five best social casinos for USA players?
Using the above criteria, this list has honed in on the five highest ranked social casinos available right now.
All of these sites operate on a dual-virtual currency system so, as well as offering purely social play, it's also possible to redeem SC as real world prizes. For quick reference, the table below shows the welcome bonus for each brand and their state availability:
Stake.us - number one for exclusive games
A giant among sweepstakes casinos, Stake.us has a huge catalog featuring more than 3,000 titles. These titles cover slots, virtual scratchers, and an assortment of classic casino-style games like blackjack, roulette and poker. There are video versions of these as well as live streamed games. Stake Originals such as Plinko and Limbo are another popular category.
Stake.us also scores strongly across bonuses. You can gather 10 GC and SC each day through the login bonus and take part in raffles. Play certain games to collect raffle entries and you could win prizes of free GC and SC. Look out for showers of bonus codes and contests and challenges.
- SC redemption: To become eligible for prize redemption, Stake Cash must be played through three times. This is higher than the average but the choice of prizes balances out any negatives. As well as cash prizes and gift cards, Stake.us gives players the chance to redeem SC as Stake.us-branded products such as t-shirts.
McLuck - strike the McJackpot any time
Home to more than 1,000 games, McLuck is one of the best sweepstakes casinos. The lobby has undergone consistent additions and now offers a panoramic choice of slots plus a number of live dealer titles. Games come from industry leaders such as 3 Oaks, Playson and PlayTech so the door is open to an assortment of game types. All of these can be accessed through the site or the iOS or Android app.
Similarly, the bonuses are wide ranging. The daily login delivers a 2,500 GC and 2.5 SC boost while social media giveaways let you collect free GC and SC. The signature feature though is the progressive McJackpot, which is automatically embedded into all slots. Any spin can activate one of the four McJackpot prizes.
- SC redemption: McLuck imposes a 1x playthrough before SC can be redeemed. You'll need just 10 SC for a gift card price but a minimum of 75 SC to redeem a cash prize.
MyPrize.US - best for ongoing rewards
Sweepstakes casino MyPrize.US launched with a solid collection of slots but has continued to grow. There are now more than 1,000 games and these cover all major categories. That's megaways slots, fishing games, virtual scratchers and table and live dealer games.
To stand out from its competitors, MyPrize.US has added creative extras to its bonuses. So, rather than following the suit of other social casinos with a daily bonus with a set amount, players spin a prize wheel. This triggers a mystery prize of up to two SC. Occasionally, the welcome offer can also include a sweepstakes casino free spins bonus.
In fact, all of the promotions here are original, like the referral bonus. Rather than a fixed amount for each referral, players receive a percentage of everything their friends play with.
- SC redemption: For Sweeps Coins to become eligible for prize redemption, they must be played through once. The lowest cash prize redemption is 100 SC.
Jackpota - Intuitive setup for beginners
No list of social casinos would be complete without Jackpota, a simple to use site that’s good for anyone new to this type of play. Since it launched in 2024, Jackpota has increased its library from 700 to more than 1,500 games. Well established and emerging games providers are featured, from 3 Oaks Gaming to Ruby Play, Reel Riot and Koala Games. This ensures there's a stellar mix of game types and enough variety for hours of play.
Each day, all Jackpota players will receive 1,500 GC and up to two SC when they sign in. Plus, you can join social media contests and look for sweepstakes casino bonus codes that unlock money off GC purchases.
- SC redemption: Once SC have been used in gameplay once, they can be redeemed as a prize. Players require 10 SC to redeem a gift certificate or 75 SC for a cash prize redemption, sent via bank transfer.
LoneStar - growing game variety
LoneStar has quickly cemented a place as one of the best sweepstakes casinos thanks to an all encompassing game selection. Slots are the biggest part of the lobby but there’s a growing choice of other game types including live dealer and table games.
One of the distinctive features of playing here are regularly occurring slots tournaments. Usually structured around a specific slot title, or several titles from one maker, players build points to climb a leaderboard. Once the contest has finished, the players in the top positions receive a proportion of a prize pool. There are also many other offers available via social media.
- SC redemption: The standard 1x playthrough applies at LoneStar. The threshold for gift certificate prizes is 45 SC or 100 SC for a cash prize.
