DraftKings Sportsbook Super Pool NFL Handicapping Contest

DraftKings Super Pool

The first big money NFL handicapping contest is now underway at DraftKings Sportsbook.

DraftKings Super Pool will have entrants make 70 picks in total from Week 4 through Week 17 to compete for a share of the guaranteed $1,000,000 prize pool.

New Jersey players can enter for $500 online at DraftKings.com now through Sunday, September 29th.

The contest runs through Week 17 of the NFL regular season. Entrants are required to make 70 picks against the spread over the course of the contest. That works out to about five picks per week on average, but there are no minimum weekly pick requirements.

For example, users can kick things off with three picks for the Week 4 games, and then make seven picks the following week. The only requirement is that players make 70 picks in total over the course of the season.

DraftKings Super Pool will pay 25% to the first-place finisher, which works out to at least $250,000 under the $1 million guarantee. If more than 2,000 players enter the Super Pool contest, payouts will grow from there. The top 149 players stand to win at least $1,000 with tiebreaks calculated as needed.

Payouts are sized according to a percentage of the prize pool, subject to the following minimums guaranteed by the $1 million prize pool:

Here’s more from DK Network:

“The expansion of sports betting has opened the door for opportunities to get in on big-name contests. DraftKings is jumping into the fray with the launch of its Super Pool contest that will feature $1 million in prizes for New Jersey contestants.

You can register now for the contest. There is a $500 entry fee, with a maximum of three entries per person, and you will be able to start making picks on September 24th with the contest locking on September 29th. Registration and all picks will need to be executed inside New Jersey state lines.”

With an entry fee of $500 and $1 million guaranteed, DraftKings will need to attract at least 2,000 entrants to cover the prize pool. If fewer than 2,000 people enter the Super Pool contest, DraftKings will have to cover the rest of the prize pool, creating an overlay.

Naturally, that opens up a potential value opportunity for NJ sports fans. The fewer entrants there are, the greater the odds of cashing.

DraftKings risks having to dig into its own pockets to meet the guarantee, but the Super Pool also looks to be a solid marketing move that should attract new users. The company has had little trouble gaining interest in the NJ market, but the playing field is getting crowded.

A lack of NFL betting contests in New Jersey prior to the start of the football season had many wondering if New Jersey residents would miss out on all the fun their Las Vegas counterparts have every year with Westgate’s SuperContest.

In years past, options were few for sports bettors looking to take their chances on a season-long handicapping competition for a big money prize pool. As with sports betting in general, Nevada had the market cornered on that front with its long running SuperContest.

The Westgate SuperContest comes with a steep $1,500 entry fee and has players make five picks against the spread each week. At the end of the competition this year, the winner is slated to claim more than $1.4 million of a prize pool that has topped $4.5 million.

The top 100 places will be paid, and there are also incremental prizes paid out along the way to keep things interesting. There are several other contests out in Vegas along these lines, but the only way for non-residents to get in on the action is to register in-person with a designated local proxy to make picks in-person each week.

SugarHouse PA has a similar Vegas pick ‘em style contest running for Pennsylvania residents as well. That one guarantees $500,000 and reserves $125,000 for the winner.
