MGM Resorts International launched its first New Jersey online casino and poker room under the playMGM brand in August of 2017 and later added sports betting in addition to rebranding itself as BetMGM. Now, customers can sign up with BetMGM.com for a single account providing access to:
- Online sports betting
- Online casino games
- Online poker
BetMGM is an all-in-one gaming site that offers real money casino games, poker and virtual sports betting. BetMGM is partnered with the Borgata in Atlantic City and holds a valid license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
- Casino, poker and virtual sports betting all under one roof
- High quality poker software
- Big collection of online slots
- Large progressive jackpot slots
- Needs more table games
- Casino bonus has high wagering requirements
BetMGM NJ operates based on the Borgata’s New Jersey license and is powered by technology supplied by GVC Holdings.
This is a similar arrangement to fellow NJ gaming sites Borgata Online and Party NJ. If you have already played at either of those, you will have a pretty good idea of what to expect at BetMGM – both are run through the Borgata New Jersey license and both are powered by GVC Holdings technology. If you’re not familiar with any of these names and haven’t played at either of those sites, just read on for the full review.
Our BetMGM review is organized into three major sections, each dedicated to one of the three types of gaming on offer (sports, casino and poker). We’ll be looking at welcome bonuses, sports betting options, game selection and much more. This is quite a hefty review, so feel free to skip around as you please.
BetMGM Sports Betting Review
BetMGM Sportsbook officially opened for business during a soft launch phase on August 22nd of 2018. The MGM Sports app initially launched for Android devices only and introduced a dedicated iOS app one month later. A full-fledged desktop website was introduced a short time later to make BetMGM Sportsbooks a fully-compatible betting site for all devices.
As far as first impressions go, the BetMGM sports betting app is clean and easy to navigate. The app has improved significantly since it was first launched, and now features an intuitive layout that makes it a simple matter to find the sports and types of bets you seek.
Our overall impression so far is that BetMGM Online Sportsbook is a capable sportsbook that strikes the right balance between offering a comprehensive wagering experience while still being fairly easy to use.
BetMGM Sportsbook Bonus
BetMGM is above average when it comes to frequency of promotions and bonuses. All new customers can claim a moneyback guarantee on their first wager while existing customers can take advantage of a variety of rotating promos that change on a regular basis.
New Customer Bonus: 100% First Wager Moneyback Guarantee
You can make yourself comfortable at BetMGM by placing your first wager with the knowledge that if it doesn’t pan out the way you’d hoped, you’ll get your money back in the form of cash. All you need to do is download the BetMGM sports betting app, sign up for an account and place your first wager of $25 or more within seven days of signing up.
If your first wager is a winner, you’ll be paid as normal that will be the end of that. However, if your first wager loses, BetMGM will refund it with up to $100 in cash. In other words, the worst thing that can happen with your first wager at BetMGM is you get your money back.
BetMGM will also throw in a $25 casino freeplay bonus just for signing up. The casino bonus does not require a deposit; registering an account is all that’s needed. However, you will need to earn 50 iRewards Points by playing in real money games to release the casino bonus.
Ongoing Sports Betting Promotions
BetMGM does a very good job offering new promotions on a regular basis for current customers. The types of offers are always changing, but the list below shows the type of promotional offering you can expect on any given day. Note that these were all real offers that were available the day this review was written.
- Nadal/Williams Boosted Parlay: During the last French Open, BetMGM offered +3500 odds on a parlay involving Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams both winning the tournament.
- Bet $10 Get $10: This random promotion was simple – bet $10 on any sport and BetMGM dropped an extra $10 in your account just because.
- Soccer Finals Cash Back: Place a $20 or greater parlay bet on the Europa Final and the Champions League final to receive $10 cash back if the parlay does not win.
- 10% Cash Back all Playoffs Long: During the last NBA Playoffs, BetMGM offered 10% cash back on all your net losses (up to $100 per week) on all straight bets.
- Get More When They Score: These short-term promotions welcomed new players with an offer to place a bet on individual NBA teams, with the added bonus of getting $3 for every point scored by the team’s star player.
- Get 100-1 On Any Golfer: Another short-term new player promotion offered by BetMGM at the time of this promotion offered new customers a chance to back any golfer in an upcoming tournament at odds of 100-1 no matter who they picked.

Sports Betting Options
BetMGM covers a full range of US and international sports that includes all the major pro leagues plus college ball, motor racing, tennis, golf, boxing, MMA and more. Basically, BetMGM Sportsbook already resembles one of the major international sports betting sites you would find operating across the pond in the UK.
The full list of sports covered includes:
|MLB||MMA / UFC||NHL|
The types of bets on offer are similarly diverse. BetMGM accepts the standard wagers such as point spreads and money lines, over/under point totals, futures, parlays, teasers and propositions. In-play betting should also be offered in the near future.
A first look at NFL futures and propositions reveals quite a diverse range just in those bet types alone. BetMGM Sports customers have all the typical futures such as Super Bowl and division winners along with props such as which team will have the worst record, how many passing yards or touchdowns certain players will achieve over the course of the season and more along those lines.
We have also noticed early lines at BetMGM are noticeably better than those offered at DraftKings Sportsbook – one of the most popular alternatives to BetMGM. In most of the NFL games we compared across both sites, BetMGM offered bigger payouts for the underdogs and favorites. This alone could be a major selling point if DraftKings doesn’t tighten up its own pricing.
Boosted Bets: One of the menu items displayed along with the list of sports leagues on the BetMGM app is reserved for “boosted bets,” which are select wagers that have been given an odds boost for the day.
For example, a recent set of boosted bets improved an NHL proposition from +400 to +500, a soccer future from +160 to +220, another soccer future from +450 to +550 and a golf proposition from +8,000 to +10,000.
Each day’s boosted bets seem to be chosen at random, so it would be a good idea to get into the habit of checking the section first thing any time you log into the BetMGM app. Occasionally, you’ll find something that offers serious value thanks to the increased odds.
Live In-Play Betting
The in-play betting experience at BetMGM Online has its pros and cons. On the positive side, BetMGM maintains a very busy live betting schedule. You can log in just about any time of the day and find numerous in-play events for a wide range of sports. Even during a slow sports month recently, we found more than twenty events on the menu during the day.
On the negative side, the in-play interface is not particularly innovative. It’s nice and simple but lacks advanced handicapping features and offers very little in terms of live data. While some other sites such as SugarHouse provide real-time information regarding possession, what’s happening on the field and other stats, BetMGM simply shows the current score.

BetMGM and Buffalo Wild Wings
BetMGM and Buffalo Wild Wings announced an agreement in September 2019 to partner on sports betting and gaming initiatives across the country. The two-pronged plan involves hosting free-to-play contests in states that have not yet legalized sports betting and special sports betting promotions in states that have.
In states that do not have legal sports betting, Buffalo Wild Wings and BetMGM will host predictions-style contests through the BWW Blazin’ Rewards app. Players can access the app to make predictions on the spread, point total and so on.
These contests cost nothing to enter but give players a chance to win prizes such as trips to Las Vegas and Borgata to compete in sports betting contests. Players can compete from anywhere but must check in at a Buffalo Wild Wings location at least once over the weekend to be eligible for prizes.
In states that do have legal betting, fans can log in to the BetMGM app while inside a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant to access special promotions such as enhanced odds and free bets. BetMGM will also provide Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants with custom betting-oriented TV programming and odds tickers.
BetMGM Casino Review
New Jersey gaming law requires all online casinos to operate through an existing land-based casino’s license. In this case, MGM Resorts International runs through Borgata’s online gaming license. This makes the most sense because MGM owns the Borgata after completing its acquisition of Atlantic City’s biggest casino in 2016.
BetMGM Casino is a full-service online casino with slots, table games, progressive jackpot games, a live dealer section, a handful of variety games and a few virtual sports betting options. Other than lacking a bit of diversity in its table games offering, BetMGM is a well-stocked online casino that hits all the most important games a casino should offer.
As far as safety and security are concerned, there are no issues to report. All casino games and internal processes at BetMGM NJ are independently audited for fairness, randomness and security in accordance with licensing conditions imposed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
BetMGM Casino Bonus
BetMGM Casino offers a two-part welcome package to all new customers consisting of a no-deposit bonus worth $25 and a 100% deposit match bonus worth up to $1,000. You will be asked if you have a bonus code when you sign up for an account, but you can leave that field blank. BetMGM Casino offers both bonuses to new customers by default.
Both bonuses are nice in that they may be withdrawn, but high wagering requirements make these bonuses difficult to clear without losing everything first. You may opt out of one or both of these bonuses at any time.
$25 Free Play Bonus
You can get $25 free to try BetMGM Casino by signing up for an account and becoming a verified player. Once BetMGM verifies you’re over 21 years of age and are located in New Jersey, an extra $25 in free play credits will be added to your account.
The $25 free play bonus can be used to play games at BetMGM immediately, but the bonus money and any winnings associated with it may not be withdrawn until you have earned 150 iReward points (iRPs).
iRPs are earned at a rate of 1 iRP for every $5 wagered at regular slots, every $10 wagered at progressive/jackpot slots, every $20 wagered at video poker and every $25 wagered at other table games. What this means is that if you play slots, the free play bonus and winnings will be released only after you have wagered a total of $750.
100% up to $1,000 Deposit Bonus
If you make your first deposit and it is $10 or more, BetMGM will double your deposit with bonus cash at a 100% rate. This means a $100 deposit will get you $100 in bonus money while a $200 deposit will get you $200 in bonus money and so on. The more you deposit, the bigger the bonus.
Note that this offer only stands for seven days after signing up for an account at BetMGM. This bonus may also be cashed out, but only after earning 6x the bonus amount in iRPs. In other words, a $100 bonus would require you to earn 600 iRPs. If you were playing slots only, a $100 bonus would require a total of $3,000 worth of wagers before you would be able to withdraw the bonus money or any winnings won by wagering the bonus money.

BetMGM Online maintains a simple and straightforward loyalty program that gives you iReward Points (iRPs) for playing real money games in the casino or poker room. You may redeem iRPs for rewards such as:
- MGM Express Comps: Redeem iRPs to get discounts on rooms at MGM Resorts, eat for free at MGM properties or to see a show at any MGM property.
- Cash and Bonuses: You may redeem your iRPs for cash or bonuses that can be used in the casino or poker room.
- Rewards Store: You may redeem your iRPs at the reward store for goodies such as iPads, Bluetooth speakers and other gifts such as sunglasses and duffel bags.
iRPs are earned by playing real money casino games and poker at BetMGM. The rate at which iRPs accumulate varies based on game type:
|Game Type||Wager to earn 1 iRP|
|Regular Slots / Other||$5|
|Progressive Jackpot Slots||$10|
|Poker Cash Games||5.5 iRPs per $1 paid in rake|
|Poker Tournaments||5.5 iRPs per $1 paid in tournament fees|
Additionally, the loyalty program is organized into five tiers ranging from Sapphire (where everyone begins) up to Noir. As you progress through the various levels of the VIP program, it gets easier and easier to earn iRPs.
Casino Game Selection
The game selection and variety at MGM Online can be considered strong for the most part. BetMGM hosts nearly 300 slots at last count and adds more every month. There are also table games, video poker, live dealer games, virtual sports betting games and more.
In total, BetMGM Online has:
- 276 slots of all types
- 11 progressive jackpot slots
- 8 table games
- 12 video poker variations
- 4 live dealer games
- 10 variety games
- 5 virtual sports games
The overall game variety is good except for table games. BetMGM is extremely short when it comes to table games. Aside from the absolute basics such as blackjack, craps and roulette, BetMGM Online has little to offer for dedicated table game players.
On a more positive note, the slots selection is quite strong by comparison. BetMGM has a wide variety in types of slots with games from numerous slots developers such as IGT, NetEnt, Konami, SG Interactive, Barcrest and more.
Game quality varies widely because BetMGM features games from so many different developers. Some games are presented with flashy, modern graphics and in-depth bonus features while others feature a basic style and simple gameplay.
BetMGM Casino Software
BetMGM Casino is available online via no-download browser play for desktop users and as a mobile app for tablet and smartphone customers. In my experience, the BetMGM software is quick to load and does not require an amazing internet connection. As long as you have a decent computer or smartphone and an average internet connection, you’ll be good to go.
The one big downside is the desktop casino is based entirely on Flash, which is a bit annoying in this day and age. All of my browsers give me Flash warnings and I am constantly having to update my Flash player just to access the casino. Hopefully BetMGM moves to HTML5 or something else sooner rather than later.
Aside from that, the casino runs without issue. The full games library can be accessed through any modern desktop without downloading anything. The only thing you may be asked to download when playing from a desktop is a browser extension that is used to verify your location, but that takes mere seconds.
Mobile and tablet users are directed to the app store to get the official BetMGM mobile app. BetMGM NJ has iOS and Android apps for smartphone and tablet users. There is no option to play through your mobile browser if you visit BetMGM from a smartphone – the only way to play is through the app.
The casino lobby is designed in a simple manner with all games listed under a few categories (slots, jackpot slots, table games, live casino, variety games and sports). Just navigate to the category you want and you’ll see all games that fit that category there. This simple layout has been good for navigation so far, but it may be time for BetMGM to think about updating the lobby with additional sort options as the games list grows.
For instance, some other NJ online casinos can be sorted by software developer, average customer rating and the casino’s top picks. BetMGM is starting to get a big enough list of games that additional sort options would come in handy now. Searching for one specific game or even games by any one software provider is starting to get a little cumbersome.
BetMGM Casino Slots
Slots are one of the main selling points for BetMGM Online. With 276 games at last count and more being added every month, you will not suffer a lack of options here. BetMGM does not merely add a bunch of similar games to claim it has a wide variety for players; the casino has actually contracted with numerous independent software developers who each provide games with a unique sense of style and pace.
The NetEnt collection is the strongest offering for players who enjoy flashy, modern games with high quality graphics. Some of the better NetEnt titles here would be Jack and the Beanstalk, Planet of the Apes, Gonzo’s Quest, Starburst, Blood Suckers and Dead or Alive.
Other software providers such as IGT and SG Interactive offer a more classic experience with games that look more like something you would find on the casino floor. In fact, BetMGM does feature a handful of the same games that currently sit on the Borgata floor. For example, Borgata’s own Crystal Forest, Dragon Spin, Fu Dao Le and Raging Rhino are just a few of the titles you can find both online and at the Borgata in person.
One way BetMGM could improve its slots offering would be to add more progressive jackpot games. Currently, there are only 11 jackpot slots at BetMGM NJ and even those share a total of three unique jackpots. For example, Luck O’ the Jackpot, Melon Madness, Loot’enkhamun, Biker Pigs and Going Nuts all share the same jackpot.
At the time of this review, there were three unique jackpots on offer at BetMGM:
- One jackpot worth $2,369,922.49
- One jackpot worth $62,895.61
- One jackpot worth $1,021.60
Table Games and Video Poker
If there is one big weakness at BetMGM, it is the table games and video poker selection. This category of games is severely neglected with not a whole lot of options to choose from. The games they do have are solid, but the variety is absolutely paltry.
BetMGM Casino’s entire table games collection includes:
- European Roulette
- Multi-Hand Blackjack
- Texas Hold’em Bonus Poker
- Vegas Downtown Blackjack Multi Player
- American Roulette
- Megaball Action (a type of keno-style card game)
The story is similar with video poker. BetMGM offers a small collection of basic video poker variations. Graphics are decent but not great and pay tables are standard for video poker. The best thing to be said about video poker at BetMGM is the house edge is tiny. If you like the idea of reducing the house advantage to the tiniest possible amount, video poker is the way to go.
BetMGM offers the following video poker formats:
- Bonus Poker
- Double Bonus Poker
- Double Double Bonus Poker
- Triple Play Draw Poker Multi Hand
- Jacks or Better
- Five Play Draw Poker Multi Hand
- Regal Poker Deluxe
- Double Regal Poker
- Double Double Regal Poker
- Jester Poker
BetMGM Live Dealer Casino
BetMGM Casino hosts live dealer games for blackjack, roulette, baccarat and Casino Holdem. What makes these games different than the typical online casino game is that they actually feature real, human dealers who run through the action at physical tables in a studio that uses real tables, real chips and real people.
Streaming video technology connects you with the dealer such that you can use your mouse and keyboard (or your smartphone) to place your bets and then watch as the dealer deals cards and drops the ball into a real spinning roulette wheel. Players can chat with one another and the dealer in real time and watch the action unfold via live video.
The BetMGM live dealer casino runs on specific operating hours:
- Mondays-Wednesdays: 2PM to 3 AM
- Thursdays-Sundays: Noon to 3 AM
Virtual Sports Betting
Now, we move back to a strong point: virtual sports betting. GVC Holdings (the software company behind BetMGM) has partnered with Inspired Entertainment, Inc. to provide customers with a selection of virtual sports betting games.
These games are designed to look and act exactly like real sports betting with one major exception: they’re based on simulated games that happen over the course of a few minutes. The graphics on these games have come a long way compared to the virtual sports games of just a few years past. Inspired Entertainment has done a great job on these games and it is difficult to come up with much constructive criticism.
The one thing Inspired could do better is to just release more sports games. Currently, BetMGM sports betting covers:
- Virtual motor racing
- Virtual greyhound racing
- Virtual horse racing
- Virtual motorcycle racing
- Virtual soccer
Here’s an example from the Inspired Gaming YouTube channel that shows the kind of content Inspired Gaming has been putting out (skip to 0:25 for the good stuff):
BetMGM Poker Review
BetMGM Poker benefits from the technical and marketing know-how of GVC Holdings, which is the parent company of a wildly successful international poker site called Party Poker. If you know the name, you know Party Poker is one of the oldest and most popular poker sites still in operation today. In fact, years ago before the UIGEA was passed, Party Poker was the biggest poker site open to USA players.
Things have changed on the legal front since then, but the same people who run Party Poker supply the software for BetMGM Poker. This means the software is stable, crisp, functional and generally just gives off the impression that it was designed by experienced people. I have played at some lesser-known poker sites in my day and the difference in software quality is massive.
High quality software and surprisingly active cash games combine to make BetMGM Poker a quality option for players. The tournament scene is also growing, with regular guaranteed prize pool events held throughout the week. That being said, we should keep in mind legal online poker is still very much a growing market in the USA – traffic numbers still have a long way to go before they rival the numbers of major poker sites active in Europe and abroad.
My overall recommendation for BetMGM Poker is to give it a try. There is enough traffic here to support games at all levels. I have seen full tables at stakes as high as $5/$10 NL, but BetMGM does have a few tables at the $25/$50 NL level that are ready to go if two or more people show up.
BetMGM Poker Bonus
The BetMGM Poker bonus welcomes all new players with a 2-part bonus consisting of $25 in free poker money and a deposit bonus worth up to $1,000.
After you sign up for an account, BetMGM will give you a total of $25 in online cash and tournament entries. If you go on to make a deposit within seven days of signing up for an account, BetMGM will give you 100% extra for up to $1,000 in bonus funds.
No-Deposit Poker Bonus
After you sign up for an account and BetMGM Poker verifies your age/location, your account will be credited with the following:
- $10 online cash: This money can be used to play poker or withdraw as you wish. The only requirement is that you earn 1 iRP before withdrawing this money, which is very easy to do.
- $15 tournament dollars: This money can be used to enter tournaments only and cannot be withdrawn. Any money that you win in tournaments entered with this money is yours to keep and withdraw as you wish.
$1,000 Deposit Bonus
If you make a deposit within seven days of signing up for a BetMGM Poker account, you’ll get 100% extra added to your deposit for up to $1,000 in bonus funds. In other words, BetMGM is willing to double your first deposit with bonus money. Deposit $50 and they’ll give you a $50 bonus, deposit $700 and they’ll give you a $700 bonus.
Your bonus money is considered pending at first but is then released in 10% increments as you earn iRPs. You must earn 20 iRPs per bonus dollar to release these increments.
Example: You deposit $100 and get a $100 bonus. Your bonus would be released in $10 increments every time you earn 200 iRPs. Bonus money that has been released may be used to play poker or withdrawn as cash.

BetMGM NJ runs one loyalty program that covers your play in the casino and poker room. The program revolves around iRewards Points (iRPs), which are earned by playing casino games, poker tournaments and cash games.
For poker players, points are earned based on rake and tournament fees paid. In cash games, you earn 5.5 iRPs for every $1 paid in rake. In tournaments, you earn 5.5 iRPs for every $1 paid in tournament fees.
Examples: If you play in a cash game and win a pot that is raked $1, you earn 5.5 iRPs. If you play in a $10 + $1 tournament, you would also earn 5.5 iRPs based on the tournament fee. The more you play, the more iRPs you earn.
As you earn iRPs, you also move up through the various tiers in the loyalty program. Each tier makes it easier to earn iRPs, which can then be redeemed for cash, bonuses and other goods from the VIP store.
BetMGM Poker Download
BetMGM poker offers software for all major desktop and mobile platforms. Desktop users can download PC or Mac software while Android and iOS users can download the mobile/tablet apps from their respective app stores.
For this review, I downloaded the BetMGM Poker Mac app and had no issues installing it or getting it to run. This is the same software platform used by Borgata Poker and Party Poker NJ with the only difference being this one has a different color scheme and BetMGM logos. Poker players at all three sites share tables. This means whether you play at Borgata, Party or BetMGM, you’ll have access to the same tables and player pool.
The people who designed this software have years’ worth of experience in online poker, so the software is of a much higher quality than you might expect for such a new poker site. BetMGM poker runs smoothly and has an overall polished look that makes it easy to focus on playing poker.
The BetMGM software supports up to four tables at a time with resizable tables and options to set auto-rebuys, four-color decks and player notes so you can note tells or betting patterns. You can also save your preferred table arrangement so that tables are automatically placed and sized in your preferred arrangement (useful for people who multi-table).
BetMGM Poker cash games are available in the form of no-limit Holdem, fixed-limit Holdem and pot-limit Omaha tables at stakes that range from $0.01/$0.02 NL to $25/$50 NL and $0.02/$0.04 to $30/$60 fixed limit. Pot limit Omaha games run at the same stakes as the no-limit tables, with the only difference being that the maximum bet is limited to the current size of the pot.
As you would expect, the majority of the action takes place at the Texas Holdem tables. No-limit Holdem is by far the most populated type of cash game at BetMGM, but you will find the occasional table for fixed-limit Holdem and pot-limit Omaha. However, keep in mind BetMGM is still a growing poker site so no-limit Holdem is by far the most active game type.
During peak hours, it is not uncommon to find full tables ranging from the micro stakes to as high as $2.50/$5.00 no-limit. The $5/$10 and higher no-limit games do run occasionally, but most action takes place at the lower and mid-level stakes.
The poker software runs heads-up, six-max and 9-person tables, with the majority of action taking place at the 6-max tables.
One other type of cash game on offer is something called “fastforward” poker. This is a form of fast-fold poker in which many players join a pool and are seated at 6-man tables. Whenever you fold your hand, you are instantly moved to a new table and dealt in just as a new hand begins. Fastforward poker completely eliminates the waiting period between hands so that you can fold weak starting hands and immediately begin a new hand without having to wait for the rest of the table.
Fastforward poker facilitates a much faster style of gameplay because you are not forced to sit around and wait for everyone to act. If you don’t like your hand, just fold it and start a new hand at a new table. All players are constantly moved from table to table in this manner to keep things moving at a fast clip. The one downside is BetMGM Poker does not yet have enough traffic to keep these games running at all times.
Types of Cash Games and Stakes:
- No Limit Holdem: $0.01/$0.02 to $25/$50
- Fixed Limit Holdem: $0.02/$0.04 to $30/$60
- Pot-Limit Omaha: $0.01/$0.02 to $25/$50
- Fastforward Holdem: $0.05/$0.10 to $0.25/$0.50 NL
- No Limit Holdem: heads-up, 6-seat and 9-seat
- Fixed Limit Holdem: heads-up, 6-seat and 10-seat
- Pot Limit Omaha: 6-seat, 9-seat and 10-seat
BetMGM Poker Tournaments
The tournament scene at BetMGM is quite active for a poker site that is still limited to players only in New Jersey. Every day, BetMGM Poker runs scheduled and sit-n-go (SNG) tournaments at stakes ranging from absolutely free to as high as $535 just to take a seat.
Guaranteed prize pool tournaments are a regular occurrence with daily freerolls that offer real cash prizes, daily $10,000 guaranteed tournaments and a weekly $40,000 guarantee that runs on Sundays. On weekdays, BetMGM holds at least 70 tournaments a day with $25,000 in guaranteed prizes each day. Sundays are the biggest day for tournaments with more than $75,000 guaranteed on that day alone.
The Sunday $40K Guaranteed is the biggest regular tournament that happens here on a weekly basis. Every Sunday, you can try your hand for a shot at the $40,000 prize pool for a buyin of $215. If that’s a little steep for the bankroll, BetMGM also holds regular satellites that you can play for a chance to win free entry to the Sunday $40K.
One of the smaller but most useful tournament features is the ability to see all qualifiers for a particular tournament at a glance. For example, you can open the Sunday $40K tournament lobby during the week and then click on “qualifiers for this tournament” to see a list of all satellites that you can play in to compete for a seat in the bigger tournament.
BetMGM hosts single table, multi-table and step SNGs every day that run as soon as the tournament has filled. If you visit the SNG tab in the poker software, you can sort the upcoming tournaments list by buyin and category to find specific types of tournaments. SNGs are hosed at buyins ranging from $0.10 at the low end to $1,000 at the high end.
While there is enough traffic to support cash games and scheduled tournaments, things are still a bit slow when it comes to SNGs. Single table tournaments do not run too often at BetMGM at this point. However, the site is growing and it seems likely the SNG scene will grow as BetMGM grows its user base.
Traffic is picking up at BetMGM poker, but all New Jersey poker sites still have some growing to do. During off hours, you’ll find around 100-150 players online. During peak evening hours, that number can spike to 500+ players.
This is still a far cry from some of the major international poker sites out there, but these traffic numbers already put the vast majority of brick-and-mortar poker rooms to shame. Being able to log in and find anywhere from 100 to 500+ players online is very nice. This is enough to support a decent number of cash games at the low to mid-level games as well as to support an active tournament scene.
No limit Holdem cash games and scheduled tournaments do the best in terms of traffic. Those game types can be found pretty much 7-days a week, 24 hours a day. Pot limit cash games, fixed-limit cash games and SNGs still struggle to run with any sort of predictability.
BetMGM Deposit Methods
One of the single biggest advantages to betting on sports, playing casino games or poker at a NJ-licensed gaming site like BetMGM Online is the ease of depositing and getting paid. Because BetMGM is legal and licensed, it does not struggle to provide customers with simple and effective deposit methods.
Once you are signed up and verified, you can use the following banking methods to make deposits and cash out your winnings.
- VIP Preferred: This is a simple electronic banking deposit method that uses your checking account to make and receive payments to and from BetMGM. All you need is your driver’s license to verify your identity, a checking account and your bank’s routing number
- Bank Transfer: This one is similar to VIP Preferred in that money is transferred to and from your bank account directly. The difference is this one uses your bank’s online banking bill-pay feature. With this method, you choose an amount to deposit and then log in to your bank’s website to confirm the transaction. BetMGM never sees your banking information when you use this method.
- Visa or MasterCard: If you have a credit or debit card with the Visa or MasterCard logo, you can use it to fund your account. This is just like buying something online at Amazon or any other online retailer. The one potential downside is some banks still do not support online gaming and automatically block transactions even to legal betting sites such as BetMGM.
- Neteller: Neteller is an online wallet that is similar to PayPal. Once you have a Neteller account, you can fund it with a credit card or direct bank deposit. Neteller comes in handy because it can also receive payments and is accepted by most gaming sites, which makes it easy to jump around between multiple gaming sites. Also, if you have any issues depositing directly to BetMGM with a credit card, you can try funding your Neteller account with that same card to get around the restriction.
- Borgata Cash Deposit: If you have cash and you’re in the Atlantic City area, you can stop by the Borgata in person to deposit with actual, physical cash. Just make sure you bring your account login information so they can credit the deposit to your online gaming account.
- PayNearMe: PayNearMe works by sending a PayCode to your e-mail or smartphone. Take that PayCode with you to a local 7-Eleven to make a cash deposit that will be credited to your BetMGM account.
MGM Sportsbook States of Operation
MGM operates sportsbooks in Nevada and New Jersey for now, but like other major sports betting operators, has plans to expand into other states as legislation permits.
BetMGM New Jersey
- Availability: Mobile betting and retail sportsbook
- Land-Based Casino: Borgata
MGM operates the Borgata in Atlantic City and thus had an easy route into the NJ sports betting market. MGM Online operates on the Borgata sports betting license and powers the retail sportsbook inside the casino.
- Availability: Online casino in the works
- Land-Based Partner: None
Lacking a land-based presence in Pennsylvania has not precluded MGM Resorts International from finding a seat at the table. A limited number of out-of-state operators were permitted to apply for online gambling licenses in Pennsylvania, and MGM jumped on the opportunity.
MGM has applied for three types of gaming licenses in PA: online slots, online table games and online poker. State law does not allow out-of-state providers to apply for online sports betting licenses, so MGM will be limited to casino games in Pennsylvania.
- Availability: Mobile betting in the works
- Land-Based Partner: Belterra Casino Resort
BetMGM has concrete plans to launch online betting in Indiana shortly, but details are limited at this time. What we do know is the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC) issued a conditional sports wagering vendor license to BetMGM in early 2020 and should be launching in the near future.
- Availability: Mobile betting and retail sportsbooks
- Land-Based Casinos: Bellagio, ARIA, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Park MGM, New York-New York, Luxor, Excalibur and Circus Circus
MGM is heavily involved in sports betting through its numerous Las Vegas properties, with each of the above hosting a retail sportsbook. State residents and visitors may also visit any casino in-person to register for online betting and then place wagers through the BetMGM app from anywhere in Nevada.
- Availability: Retail sportsbooks
- Land-Based Casino: Beau Rivage Resort & Casino and Gold Strike
After Mississippi legalized sports betting in 2018, MGM opened sportsbooks at Beau Rivage in Biloxi and Gold Strike in Tunica. Online betting is not permitted in Mississippi, but MGM will have no trouble launching a mobile sportsbook should that change.
MGM resorts purchased Empire City Casino in 2019 for $850 million and could potentially offer sports betting in New York if state law changes. Currently, a law passed in 2013 only allows the state’s four upstate commercial casinos (and tribal casinos by default due to gaming compacts) to offer sports betting.
Lawmakers in Maryland made a serious attempt to legalize sports betting in 2019, but their efforts were shot down after the Attorney General told them the only way to authorize sports betting would be to hold a public referendum and amend the state constitution. If lawmakers can clear that hurdle, MGM National Harbor is in position to offer a retail sportsbook and possibly mobile betting.
MGM operates the MGM Springfield in Massachusetts and would therefore have a clear path to offering sports betting should state law change. Numerous legislators have expressed support of legalization, but for right now, sports betting is prohibited across the state.
The Michigan legislature has come very close to authorizing sports betting in the past, only to have the governor veto the bill at the last minute. Still, Michigan remains in play as a state that will likely legalize in-person and mobile betting at some point. If that happens, MGM will have an inroad to the market via MGM Grand Detroit.
The MGM Northfield Park in Ohio offers MGM the clearest path to sports betting should it be legalized in Ohio. The odds of that happening over the medium-term are good, but lawmakers still need to hammer out the details on how it would all work and then actually pass a bill.
